Thanks to a three-year grant from the Welsh Assembly Government Adoption UK has been able to extend its services and presence in Wales.
We now have an office in Cardiff, staffed by Development Manager Ann Bell, who is both an adoptee and an adoptive parent, and by helpline adviser Helen Griffiths.
The grant is enabling Adoption UK to develop its services in Wales, to offer adopters and prospective adopters improved and targeted support services.
The Adoption UK Helpline for Wales is open Monday to Friday 11am to 1pm on 02920 232221. Calls are charged at standard UK rates.
At other times, please call the Adoption UK national Helpline on 0844 8487900 (Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm).
We currently run support groups in Newport and Cardiff and would like to recruit new Volunteer Coordinators to start groups in other areas of Wales. Contact the Welsh office for more information.
Coordinators are adoptive parents and members of Adoption UK who give their time to run support group meetings and provide advice, encouragement and support to adopters and prospective adopters.
Adoption UK runs a range of popular training workshops, conferences and seminars on issues such as Getting ready for Placement to Parenting Adopted Teenagers to Children Who Struggle at School. A number of these events will take place in Wales.
Adoption UK's acclaimed six-day traiing programme 'It's a Piece of Cake' also runs regularly.
Workshops run regularly in Wales, and details of up and coming workshops and events will appear in the Training section of the site.
To find out about workshops running in your area of Wales contact the Training Team.
Adoption UK in Wales is represented by the Welsh Advisory Group, a group of adoptive parents and practitioners with local knowledge who provide advice on adoption policy and practise issues.
Their advice is used both to develop Adoption UK’s services for adopters and prospective adopters, and to respond to government.
We are currently surveying adoptive parents in Wales to find out more about their support needs, particularly around education and therapeutic services and will be using the results of the survey to campaign on their behalf.
Research carried out by Adoption UK Wales reveals that much more needs to be done to support adopters in Wales. Read the full Support Needs of Adoptive Families in Wales report here in either English or Welsh.
